Dereck Lively II - Dallas Mavericks Player Community Bio

Dereck Lively II, a center for the Dallas Mavericks, has a profound personal connection to his advocacy for families impacted by cancer. His mother, Kathy Drysdale, a former basketball star at Penn State, passed away with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 20241. This experience has significantly influenced Lively's dedication to assisting families confronting similar adversities.

Since being selected as a first-round pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, Lively has actively engaged in various community initiatives organized by the Mavericks to benefit the Dallas community. In October 2024, he, along with Dwight Powell, participated in the Kay Yow EmPOWERment Tour, which visited several local high schools, including Yvonne E. Ewell Townview Center, PACE High School and Franklin D. Roosevelt High School, aimed at educating and empowering students regarding cancer awareness. Additionally, Lively and P.J. Washington collaborated with families from CCA Lewisville (Christian Community Action) for a holiday shopping event, generously supported by SCHEELS and the Dallas Mavericks. Finally, following Lively's visit to their neighborhood, a group of children was inspired to establish a lemonade stand, donating the proceeds to a cancer center that Lively supports.
